PSG Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Super Cup in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the season-opening cup on 14 separate occasions.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. First, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past thirteen years.
