Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
