Coaching an Infant to Grow into an 'British Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Cost?

Child education concept
The firm responsible for the listing states that what seems like "extravagance or oddity" is actually "purposeful investment in initial education".

"A family located in the northern part of London is looking for an extraordinary and skilled instructor to guide their youngest child on his initial journey to becoming an British gentleman."

Looking at this listing, you might readily miss the phrase "initial stages" as mere an expression.

But, it may be the most important part of this unique employment listing, as it aims to recruit a tutor for a one-year-old.

Many of applications have now been received since the anonymous family posted their request for the £180,000 per year tutor, who needs to be "someone very special".

In recent few weeks, the listing has gained attention across the press, with several questioning why?

Forward-Thinking Method

A tutoring expert, CEO and founder of a global tutoring firm, which is helping the family in their quest, said that notwithstanding early doubt, he considered the concept "visionary", and "innovative".

When he spoke with the family, he mentioned they understood the atypical nature of their requirement, and how young their son is.

Nevertheless, they clarified that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had postponed until their elder sibling was five, and by that stage "cultural bias had already become established".

What exactly does the family mean by "cultural bias"?

It's "all-encompassing", Adam answered. "The way you eat, the way you speak".

He explained the elder child had adopted "really subtle, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had adopted their cultural ways. The family explained to the consultant they did not want history to happen again with their infant.

The plan: To hire a British tutor, who should speak with Received Pronunciation, to influence the baby right from the beginning.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency state the listing has started a larger discussion about how households view schooling, elitism and the part of family background in education.

Natural Absorption

"Much of the learning at the beginning here is kind of absorbed naturally," stated the CEO.

It's by means of this natural absorption that the family are hoping the child will pick up the UK customs they want to impart.

He noted the tutor needed to be someone who studied at "the appropriate educational institutions – comparable categories of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The educator simply needs to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be performing things they don't even know they're doing, simply by nature," he said.

Money No Object

The family informed Adam the successful candidate should ideally also have understanding of or interest in equestrian activities, winter sports, the arts and musical activities so as to inspire the child in a wide range of passions.

Additionally though, he said the family wanted the tutor to enrol the child on a variety of classes so the child would be "horseback riding and starting an instrument by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's view, guiding their son grow into a "UK sophisticate" will lead to success and open doors.

"Considering the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's undoubtedly a status symbol," he adds.

However, despite all this tutelage in "English culture", might the child adopt alleged cultural leaning from the globally influenced family he is raised by in any case?

"Yes", answered Adam. "The family know this could fail, but they've simply adopted the perspective of, 'why not attempt it and let's go as soon as we can', because the price of it is not relevant," he stated.

Overly Optimistic

A number of in the tutoring industry who have those doubts.

An education leader, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who also offer individual instructors, stated that "the development of embracing two identities, or in fact, discovering oneself, is something that must be experienced personally, not designed."

Peter explained that he had relocated from Asia to the Britain at the age of 7 years old, and had been educated understanding and practicing dual heritages. He went on to be educated at a prestigious UK institution.

Peter Cui was the first person born in China to be elected to the position of Treasurer of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The concept that a single person can act as a embodiment of UK identity, someone who can in some way transplant the attributes of a British gentleman onto a infant child, appears optimistic and impractical," he commented.

"Based on my background, having a typically British tutor from early childhood will does not instantly create the goal they want.

"I wasn't provided with such a tutor, and however I have been privileged enough to enjoy many of the experiences they hope for their son."

He continued: "The reality is, self-identity can not be dictated from the external environment; it must be embraced, and it must originate internally."

Purchasing UK Culture

Naturally, UK identity is something Adam hopes can be instructed – and commercialized.

"In my view the fact that the global community views us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
