A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
